Introduction:Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the major causative agent of hepatitis worldwide. According to World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 240 million people globally have chronic HBV infection (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs204/en/). HBV infection has been reported to result in liver cirrhosis, hepatic failure, or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), leading to about 780,000 deaths each year globally. HCC is the fifth most common cancer and the second cause of cancer-related deaths in the world, and nearly 53% of HCC is estimated to be related to HBV. Additionally, it is predicted that the risk of HCC increases by 5- to 15-fold in individuals who are chronically infected with HBV.
