On Translating Introductions to Scenic Spots in Hangzhou from the Perspective of Communicative Translation

Abstract:

With the development of globalization, international tour plays an important role in peoplersquo;s life. Translation of introductions to scenic spots is a direct communication among people from different background, the quality of which determines the impression left on tourists. Hence, the translation of introductions to scenic spots becomes important.

Chinese scholarsrsquo; studies on tourism material largely focus on the selection of translation strategies. Most of the scholars compare English versions with Chinese versions from different perspectives in terms of scenic spots names, scenic spots signs and introductions to scenic spots and try to work out suitable translating strategies. Cultural perspective and functionalist perspective are frequently used. As for the studies carried out overseas, most of the studies about tourism material translation focus on the quality of translation in a literal sense, such as language accuracy and fluency (Gill Hogg, Min-Hsiu Liaoamp;Kevin Orsquo; Gorman). Moreover, there is a tendency that scholars begin to take an important factor, culture, into consideration.This paper is aimed at exploring practical suggestions on how to translate introductions to scenic spots in Hangzhou by the guidance of Peter Newmarkrsquo;s communicative translation. Hangzhou, as a historical and cultural city, is preferred by international tourists. The translation here are particularly important. This paper is aimed at exploring practical suggestions on how to translate introductions to scenic spots in Hangzhou by the guidance of communicative translation.

随着国际交往日益频繁,跨国旅游成为人们生活的一部分。景点简介作为一种最直接的交流方式,其翻译质量的好坏的翻译影响着国际游客的对中国的印象。因此,景点简介翻译显得尤为重要。

中国学者对旅游材料翻译的研究主要集中于翻译策略的选用。大部分学者通过文化视角或是功能视角来对比中英文景点名称、标语、简介并给出相应的策略。Gill Hogg, Min-Hsiu Liao和Kevin Orsquo; Gorman三位学者指出国外的研究大部分都热衷于探讨语言是否准确、流畅。另外,国外学者逐渐趋于从文化差异角度分析旅游翻译。杭州,作为一座历史文化古城,十分受到外国游客青睐。本文旨从交际翻译视角分析杭州的景点简介翻译并给类似的文本翻译提供建议。
