RepresentativeofAmericanmodernists,TheodoreDreiserisconsideredoneoftheBigThreeofAmericanmodernistnovelswithEarnestHemingwayandWilliamFaulkner.BornonAugust27in1871inTerreHaute,Indiana,Dreiserwasthetwelfthofthirteenchildren(theninthofthetensurviving).Hisfather-JohnPaulDreiserwasaGermanimmigrantfromMayenintheEifelregion.AsthesonofapoorGermanimmigrant,DreiserfeltabouthisfamilysmarginalizedpredicamentintheAmericansocietyasawhole,thusfullofenthusiasmaboutextensivelyobservingthesocialreality.HewalkedthroughoutthemetropolitancitiesoftheUnitedStatessuchasNewYork,Chicago,etc,whichaccumulatedtheabundantwritingmaterialsforhislaterliterarycreation.In1944,Dreiserwasawardedhonorbythenationalinstituteofartandliterature.Nextyear,hejoinedthecommunistpartyanddiedonDecember28inthesameyear.
