1.1 Overview of Curriculum Objectives

1.1.1 Definition of Curriculum Objectives

The definition of curriculum objectives has been the focus of controversy for the majority of experts and scholars. Professor Shi Liangfang (1996) believes that curriculum objectives are the most important standards in guiding the construction of curriculum. Therefore, they are instructive and practical for curriculum content, curriculum structure, curriculum implementation and curriculum evaluation. According to Zhong Qiquan and Yang Mingquan (2002), curriculum objectives, as the sub-concepts of education purpose, are the desired targets and results of curriculum development, which shows the educational value of curriculum. Therefore, they think curriculum objectives are more concrete and microscopic in comparison with the education purpose. Han Heming (2006) believes that in the process of designing and developing curriculum, curriculum objectives refer to a kind of degree to which students are expected to achieve in terms of morality, intelligence, fitness, quality, etc. Zhang Wei (2006) defines the concept of curriculum objectives from three views: macroscopic view, intermediate view and microscopic view. From the macroscopic view, curriculum objectives refer to the education purpose putting forward the overall requirements for studentsrsquo; development. From the intermediate view, curriculum objectives include the specific requirements of curriculum reform, and the focus should be cultivating studentsrsquo; innovative ability. From the microscopic view, curriculum objectives are desired requirements for studentsrsquo; growth and development, which embody the special features of certain curriculum.

Generally speaking, curriculum objectives are not only a part of curriculum standards, but also elements of the whole education system. That is to say, curriculum objectives of different subjects are the guidance and programmatic document of education. They are also the specific requirements of curriculum itself in the process of curriculum design and development.

1.1.2 Classification of English Curriculum Objectives

English curriculum objectives, as a branch of curriculum objectives, have developed rapidly along with the society since they were officially put forward. The NECS issued by the Ministry of Education clearly in February 2012 states the general objective of English curriculum: to develop studentsrsquo; basic comprehensive ability in language use, to promote studentsrsquo; mental development, and to improve studentsrsquo; humanity qualities. The NECS also classifies English curriculum objectives into five dimensions (language skill, language knowledge, emotion and attitude, learning strategy and cultural awareness), and provides definitions as follows:

  1. Language skill (NECS, 2012)

Language skill consists of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It is a vital part of developing comprehensive ability in language use. These four skills can be classified into two dimensions --- skills of understanding (listening and reading) and skills of expressing (speaking and writing). In the process of learning and communication, these four skills complement and illuminate each other.

  1. Language knowledge (NECS, 2012)

Language knowledge consists of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, function and topic. It is an important part of comprehensive ability in language use and the foundation of developing language skills. It refers to the basic knowledge of English language that students should be able to acquire.

  1. Emotion and attitude (NECS, 2012)

Emotion and attitude consist of motivation and interests, confidence and will, cooperative spirits, national conscience and international view. They can exert a strong influence on students during their learning process. Therefore, holding a positive emotion and attitude is the key to a successful English learning.
