A Study of Film Translation for Dubbing Purpose from the Perspective of Skopos Theory
——With Film “Mulan” as a Case Study
Abstract
With the rapid development of movie and television industry and the need of cross-cultural communication, audio-visual translation has played a more and more important role in public life in recent years. In the study of audio-visual translation, dubbing and subtitling are two of the most frequently used forms. According to the current research situation, it can be noticeably found that studies of subtitle translation account for a large proportion while investigations on dubbing translation is still lacking.
Based on the practical application and significance of skopos theory in film dubbing translation, this thesis aims to figure out how skopos theory is applied to the study of film dubbing translation and discuss some problems of film dubbing translation on the basis of the application of translation theory in order to enable the film dubbing translator to achieve the translation task successfully. Through the study film dubbing translation from the prospective of skopos theory, this thesis hopes to promote the application of translation theories and the further development of film dubbing translation to some extent.

一、文献综述
- Introduction on current situation
In recent years, with the development of communication technology and the frequency of intercultural communication, audio-visual translation has developed rapidly in China and western countries. As for the study of this area, dubbing and scripting are two of the most important aspects. By drawing on skopos theory, this thesis will focus on the differences of dubbed Chinese lines and original English scripts in dubbed film through some cases study of typical movie in order to discuss the translation strategies and find out the reasons of the differences then probe into the needed conditions and requirements during the manufacturing process of the dubbed film.
The theory adopted in this thesis is Skopos theory. It was established by the German linguists Hans Vermeer and Katharina Reiszlig;, which focuses on translation as an activity with an aim or purpose, and on the intended addressee or audience of the translation. This theory is widely used in film translation, under the guidance of this theory, the translator will choose the most appropriate translation strategies according to the translation purpose. Instead of just considering whether to faithfully convey the information of the text, but also take many other aspects into consideration like the characteristics of film language, and the acceptance of the audience and so on.
