A Study of Coherence and Cohesion in “Folding Beijing”
Abstract:“Folding Beijing”, as the second Chinese science fiction which won the Hugo Award, is undoubtedly an excellent science fiction. “Folding Beijing” winning the Hugo Award also bring Chinese science fiction to the world stage again after Liu Cixinrsquo;s “The Three-Body Problem”. The word-class success of this Chinese science fiction is not only attributive to the author, Hao Jingfangrsquo;s ingenious idea, bold imagination and excellent writing, but also, to a great extent, attributive to the translator, Ken Liursquo;s remarkable translation. It is because of Ken Liursquo;s contribution that “Folding Beijing” can be known to the readers from western countries and then becomes world-famous.
The traditional translation regards translation as the transformation of two different language, the faithfulness of the target text to the original text is the primary condition of translation evaluation. Such translation one-side pursuit the equivalence between words or sentences, but ignore the cohesion and coherence which make the text an integrate one. The emergence of text linguistics in the 20th century has extended the study of language to the textual level. Analyzing translation problems from the perspective of text linguistics can deal with the reproduction of information at a higher level.
Cohesion and Coherence are two major standards of a text, a good text must be cohesive and coherent. Obviously, the success of the translation of “Folding Beijing” is greatly associated with the cohesion and coherence in it. However, since “Folding Beijing” is an English translation work, the differences in cohesion and coherence between Chinese and English can not be ignored.
This thesis will compare the differences in cohesion and coherence between “Folding Beijing” and its original text and see how Ken Liu deal with these differences in the process of translation and at the same time reproduce the information on the basis of English standards and characteristics. And this literature review will collect and summarize the the previous study on cohesion and coherence abroad and at home and the current study on “Folding Beijing” to lay the foundation for the further study of this thesis.

摘要:《北京折叠》作为第二部获得雨果奖的中国科幻小说,无疑是一部优秀的作品。《北京折叠》的获奖也继刘慈欣的《三体》之后又一次将中国科幻小说推向世界舞台。《北京折叠》之所以能获得世界级的成功,不仅仅归功于作者郝景芳的巧妙构思,大胆想象和优秀文笔,还在很大程度上归功于译者刘宇昆的出色翻译。正是因为刘宇昆的翻译,《北京折叠》才得以为西方读者读者所知并闻名世界。
传统的翻译视翻译的过程为两种语言的转换,而目标语篇对源语语篇的忠实性是翻译评价的首要条件。这种翻译模式单方面追求词与词、句子与句子间意义的等价,而忽略了文本内部的,使文本成为一个整体的衔接和连贯。随着二十世纪篇章语言学的出现,语言研究扩展到了语篇层面,而从篇章语言学的角度分析翻译问题可以处理更高层次的信息再现。
衔接和连贯是语篇的两个主要标准,一个优秀的语篇必须衔接得当,连贯顺畅。显然,《北京折叠》译本的成功与其中对语篇衔接和连贯的处理密不可分。但是,从汉英翻译研究的角度来看,中文与英文在衔接与连贯上的区别也不容忽视。
