The Influence of Error-analysis Strategies on English Learnersrsquo; Passage Dictation Proficiency
Abstract
Dictation, to large extent, comprehensively examines studentsrsquo; knowledge in English and ability in English learning. Meanwhile, it also asks students to have a good command of foreign culture and to stay in good psychological quality. Additionally, out of its novelty and comprehensiveness, English major students are less likely to gain a satisfactory score in dictation. This research aims to build up studentsrsquo; dictation error-analysis strategies, looking forward to efficiently improving English major studentsrsquo; dictation ability.
Forty-nine Students in two parallel classes, who entered college in 2016, participated in the experiment. By the mean of experimental research, the researchers do the experiment on the topic that whether studentrsquo;s ability in dictation error-analysis strategies will influence their dictation ability. And the experiment lasted for one year. The students who had relatively equal command of English were randomly divided into the experimental group and the control group according to their natural classes. The experimental group would adopt error-analysis strategies when they have daily dictation training; the control group would not adopt error-analysis strategies when they have daily dictation training. And there is no difference between other English teaching procedure of the two groups. The purpose of this study is trying to answer two questions:
(1) Can practice on dictation error-analysis strategies efficiently improve studentsrsquo; awareness in dictation error-analysis strategies?
(2) Can studentsrsquo; awareness in dictation error-analysis strategies significantly influence studentsrsquo; dictation proficiency?
(3) Are there significant differences among different errors in English passage dictation?
Results indicated that:
- Practice on dictation error-analysis strategies will efficiently improve studentsrsquo; awareness in dictation error-analysis strategies;
- Studentsrsquo; awareness in dictation error-analysis strategies can significantly influence studentsrsquo; dictation proficiency.
- There are significant differences among different errors in English passage dictation.
The results of this research have practical significance on dictation teaching activities. There is a positive correlation between dictation proficiency and dictation error-analysis strategies. Thus, the strategies can be applied in daily training of dictation. Studentsrsquo; awareness in dictation error-analysis strategies should be built up consciously in daily English teaching process. Teacher are supposed to arrange dictation practice combined with error-analysis strategies and offer guidance in strategy level, aiming at improve studentsrsquo; proficiency in dictation by adopting effective strategies.
