On the Translation of Bird Images in Chinese Classical Poetry from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory

Abstract: Image occupies an important place in Chinese classical poetry. The origin of applying images in poems can be traced back to The Book of Songs(Shi Jing), the first poem collection in the world. Among all the various images in Chinese classical poems, there are many kinds of bird images. They are unions of external objects and the poetsrsquo; internal emotions, and are also carriers of connections between other aesthetic objects in a poem. However, in Chinese-English translation, it is not easy to convey the exact meaning of these bird images to English readers, including their textual implications and structural significance. In this paper, there will be descriptions of Eugene Albert Nidarsquo;s Functional Equivalence Theory and bird images in Chinese classical poetry, appreciations of different versions of certain bird image translation by translators from home and abroad. The author will also analyze the success and failure in these translations on the basis of Functional Equivalence Theory and come out with some suggestion on bird image translation.
