The Divergence of Relationship,love,religion between fantasy and reality in Araby

Abstract

The novel Araby is from James Joycersquo;s first important work----Dubliners (1914). Araby by James Joyce is much more than a story of first love but a Bildungsroman, which is a novel of growth or development; it is a portrait of a world that defies the fantasy and the reality. The writer concentrates on the theme that boyrsquo;s growing from innocence to experience and from immaturity to maturity by describing divergence of relationship, love and religion between fantasy and reality, and furthermore reinforces the theme and characters of the boy in Araby by using chosen settings, imagery, religious images and taking western culture into consideration.

摘要

阿拉比这篇小说来自詹姆斯·乔伊斯的第一部重要作品都柏林人。这本小说不仅是一个关于初恋的故事，更是一篇成长小说，讲述了主人公不断自我成长发展的过程。它讲述了一个蔑视幻想与现实的世界。这篇小说的主题为男孩从无知到成熟的成长过程，并且作者通过小说中复杂的人物关系、爱情故事以及宗教信仰在幻想和现实中的差异分歧来描述这一主题。同时，文中精心设计的环境、比喻、宗教意象以及考虑到西方文化等一系列手法也进一步地突出小说主题及人物特征。

James Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-guade of the early 20th century.Whatever and wherever Joyce wrote it was the Dublin of his youth and young manhood that provided the central substance of his work. Joyce, as a child and as a student, roams the streets and becomes familiar with the oddest corners of the city. Dublin has impressive public places, dignified architecture, and a fine cultural life, yet it is small enough for a sense of community at its center here, for the inhabitants to know one another, and for the cityrsquo;s characters to be a matter of interest to all.
