During early 20 century, there appeared a new literary movement called the New Culture Movement. Before the New Culture Movement, most of English poems were translated into classic Chinese genre. In 1920, Hu Shi published his first poetry anthology, named The Book of Experiment. In this book, he managed to use vernacular language as the target language. And Hu Shi himself became the very advocator of New Culture Movement. In his eyes, he thought there need to be a new kind of literature to stand for the new age.

As one of the most influential scholars in China, Hu Shi was always the rock of academic circle. Earlier study works included A Complete Collection of Hu Shirsquo;s Diaries, Hu Shi the Modern Ideologist in Chinese History(Yu Shiying), Hu Shirsquo;s Literary Thought under the Influence of Western Culture(Wang Guanghe)......

However, most scholars and literary critics paid close attention to Hu Shirsquo; literary thoughts rather than the poetry anthology, The Book of Experiment. Even less attention focused on his English poetry translation.

Then in 2006, Liao Qiyi introduced Hu Shirsquo;s poetry translation as an individual case to analyze the procedure of the gradual changes occurred in vernacular poems which started from themes, forms, language and, finally, ended with the emergence of a new type of literature. In his essay , he connected Hu Shirsquo;s personal life experience, especially his tragic marriage, with his translation of English poems. And he concluded that his translation works were the carrier of his emotional eagerness of freedom.

In Zhao Jinmingrsquo;s essay----the Aanalysis of Hu Shirsquo;s Poetry Translation, he divided Hu Shirsquo;s poetry translation into three phases, namely the early period, experimental period and mature period. From the analysis of Hu Shirsquo;s translation thoughts, he concluded that Hu Shi mistranslated part of his work on purpose. And his work was an organic unification between creation and translation.

Doctor. Zhuang Sen wrote a book called the Literary Thought of Hu Shi in 2013. In his book, he thought a clear development of Hursquo;s idea about freedom could be tracked down in his usage of vernacular language. From the experiment of vernacular poems to the ripe version of vernacular prose, Hursquo;s emotional rebellion against the rigid Chinese genre can be fully perceived.

All of them above didnrsquo;t cast their eyes over the creativity in Hursquo;s poems. In this essay, a detailed analysis will be given in the aspect of creative treason. Creative treason was put forward by French literary socialist Robert Escarpi. In his book Literary Sociology, he regards translation as a kind of creative treason. He thinks there is always a departure between the translated works and the original ones. To achieve translatorsrsquo; different goals and to meet the needs of target readers, translators adapt different strategies and methods, using their personal skills and writing styles. Meanwhile, the translators may deliberately add or delete part of content so that there will be a better linkage between accuracy and fluency. Thus different versions of translation are also different understanding offered by various translator. In other words, the treason appeared in translation is filtered through translatorsrsquo; perception of translator. While the perception of translators is formed by their individual life experience. So this essay will talk about Hursquo;s three phases of translation periods, but more efforts will be made in the discussion about departure and creativity in Hursquo;s poetry translation and seek the track of his rebellious spirit.
