Literature Review
The Great Gatsby(1920s) is a quite well-known novel written by the famous American writer F. Scott. Fitzgerald. The author is regarded as one of the greatest American twentieth-century writers. In The Great Gatsby, many themes have been analyzed by scholars both at home and abroad, such as the destruction of the American Dream, the reasons of Gatsbyrsquo;s tragic ending and the symbolism. There is a short list of topics that other scholars and critics have analyzed.
As we all know, American Dream is always related to American literature. Gatsbyrsquo;s failure to realize his dream of regaining Daisyrsquo;s love embodies the disillusionment of his American Dream.Themes about American Dream in The Great Gatsby are frequently analyzed by scholars. For example, many scholars describes the original meaning of the American Dream, the distinction between the early American Dream and American Dream that in Gatsbyrsquo;s heart. And how and why Gatsbyrsquo;s American Dream destroyed is also analyzed by scholars and critics.
The symbolism in The Great Gatsby is also a common theme for scholars to discuss. And the using of symbolism plays a very crucial role in the novel. First comes the color symbolism. There are many colors that we need to pay attention to in the novel, such as yellow, white, green and blue, because all of them have special meanings. Moreover, the symbolism of the geographical factors, like the East and the West in the novel, is also frequently discussed. And many other things has symbols too, such as houses and vehicles in the novel. In The Great Gatsby, numerous symbolism techniques contribute to the success of the book to some extent.
The Great Gatsby tells a story about the protagonist Jay Gatsby who has a bad ending. And many scholars are interested in analyzing the reasons why Gatsby has a tragic ending eventually. And several reasons have been discussed by critics. First, the disillusionment of the American Dream is one of the reasons of Gatsbyrsquo;s tragic ending. Then Gatsbyrsquo;s personality is also a crucial factor leading to his tragedy. Finally, the social factor is an indispensable reason that results in Gatsbyrsquo;s tragedy. Those three reasons are mainly seen from scholarsrsquo; essays.
In The Great Gatsby, two women, Daisy Buchanan and Jordan Baker, play very significant roles. Many papers have discussed The Great Gatsby from a perspective of them. For instance, the Feminism is invariably attached importance to by scholars. With compared to Jordan Baker, scholars and critics prefer to analyze Daisy from different aspects. They are fond of analyzing the characteristics of personality of Daisy. And they also prefer to discuss the description of Daisyrsquo;s voice.
The tragic love between Gatsby and Daisy is also a field for scholars to research in The Great Gatsby. Scholars have analyzed three different parts, namely, the tragedy of Gatsby, the tragedy of Daisy and the causes of the tragic love. In regard to the third part, two reasons are discussed. Those are barrier of social class and the disillusion of the American Dream.
Many scholars and critics are also interested in the narrative characteristics in The Great Gatsby. It is universally acknowledged that the narrative characteristics contribute to the success of the novel. And they discussed the observer-narrator in the novel, namely, the first-person narrator. Then they analyzed the multiple narrators in The Great Gatsby, such as Jordan Baker and Wolfsheim. Those two characters are also narrators to some extent.
As for me, I attempt to seek a topic from a different and novel perspective. There is no doubt that everyone is curious about the protagonists—Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. So lots of people strive to dig out every aspect about them. Frankly, the first-person narrator Nick Carraway should also be paid more attention to, whose role is neglected in a long time.
Although Nick Carraway is easy to be neglected when scholars try to explore useful parts in The Great Gatsby, some people still have discussed and analyzed this indispensable role. In order to explore more useful information about Nick Carraway, I have found and seen many related materials and papers recently.
