A Study of Religious Culture Translation from the Perspective of Medio-Translatology——With Reference to Rice Translated by Howard Goldblatt
Abstract: As a novel of new historicism written by Su Tong, Rice contains plentiful Buddhist and Taoist culture and related words. Under the instruction of Medio-Translatology written by Xie Tianzhen, this paper takes the English version of Su Tongrsquo;s novel Rice as the example, is to analyze the translation of religious culture elements from the angle of culture. Through comparative research on original work and translation, this paper aims to manifest the distorted religious culture during the process of translation between the two languages with different cultural backgrounds. Besides, the strategies adopted by Howard Goldblatt when translating those culturally-loaded words also reflect translatorrsquo;s cultural orientation and cultural translation theory.

一、文献综述
The famous American linguist, translation theorist Eugene Albert Nida (2004) made a great contribution to the division of language culture, including ecological culture, material culture, social culture, religious culture, linguistic culture. Religious culture is widely contained in different literature works and often causes some misunderstandings during the process of translation. Since different country shares different religious culture, the translation of religious culture truly worth our attention.
Medio-translatology (Xie Tianzhen 1999) places the focus on cross-cultural translation and the creative treachery. This theory also studies the phenomena of the losing and distortion of cultural information in language transformation between the two languages with different cultural backgrounds. Since the translation of novel Rice is literary translation, containing much cultural information, Medio-Translatology would be of great significance for the study because it can broaden our horizons and deepen our understandings of literal translation. Thus, the combination of medio-translatology and cross-cultural translation is often the case.
Previous studies such as Foreignizing Tendency of Culture----Transfer of the Cultural Images in the English Version of To Live from Media-Translatology (CAO Hui, 2012) discusses the phenomenon that a large number of cultural images are broken and even distorted in the process of translation and analyzes the changed elements in Chinese thinking habit, historical conventions as well as the religious culture. We can learn from the sentences in the novel that Buddhism culture is contained in it. For example, “For me to have had the good fortune to marry such a virtuous person in this life must have been repayment for having been a barking dog in the last” actually reflects the karma in Buddhism. Since the novel Rice by Su Tong also contains Buddhism elements, the study of To Live provides references to the study of novel Rice.
Despite the novel is successfully introduced into English speaking countries, little has been written in English about translation of religious culture in previous studies, not to mention Buddhism or Taoism. Besides, previous studies mainly focus on a general review of cultural images translations but lack of religious culture research. Therefore, instead of being restricted to linguistic analysis, this paper attempts to study the translation of religious culture and argues that cultural elements inevitably get lost or distorted in the process of translation.
