A Study of Xu Yuanzhongrsquo;s Theory of Beauty in Three Aspects

A Case Study of the Story of the Stone

Abstract

Since the publication of the Story of the Stone, the greatest critical realism work in the eighteenth century, numerous scholars from home and abroad have been attracted to the study of translation theories of it. Scholars have been spending most time on studying the various English versions on translating the names of people and places, or the application of the translation theory, such as domestication and foreignization. The translation study of old poems in the Story of the Stone is also a heated topic. However, translation is not only a technology, which emphasizes the precision and faithfulness, but also an art. It means that a satisfying translation should meet the following criterion, namely faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, which was put forward by Yanfu. In recent years, scholarsrsquo; study focus of the Story of the Stone has been shifted gradually from translation science to translation art. This paper is aiming at exploring the influence which aesthetic theory has on translation and giving the practical suggestions on how to translate literary works through a case study of The Story Of The Stone, translated by David Hawks from the perspective of aesthetics.

18世纪批判现实主义伟大作品《红楼梦》自面世以来，就吸引众多中外学者的注意。中外学者对《红楼梦》的研究主要集中在比较不同译本中人名、地名的英译，归化与异化的翻译理论的应用以及文中古诗的英译，着重研究不同译者的翻译技巧和翻译策略。但是，翻译除了是一种技术，更是一种艺术，即好的译文要同时满足严复先生提倡的信，达，雅三个要求。近几年中外学者对红楼梦译本的研究重心也渐渐从翻译技术转移到翻译艺术，即从翻译美学的角度来对红楼梦的译本进行赏析，从翻译的审美主体，审美客体，审美再现手段等方面来详细分析不同译本的优劣。本文旨在探索美学理论对翻译的影响，以及通过用翻译美学的理论对霍克斯所翻译的《红楼梦》前二十回的进行探究并为同类作品的翻译提供具体的建议。

一、文献综述

After a detailed documentary search, it can be figured out that aesthetics occupies a decisive position in translating literature work. Translation is a technology, which requires a basic knowledge of translation theory and strategy. Translation is an art, which requires a study of aesthetics. The relationship between translation and aesthetics can be simplified as follow. Translation has many modes, such as linguistic mode, literature translation mode, and technology translation mode. The aesthetic translation mode is one of these basic modes, and located in the foundation of them. Now, several standpoints found during the study are unfolded as follows.
