Literature review

Domestication and foreignization are two strategies in translation, both have advantages and disadvantages;we should combine them together to translate.

2.1 Definition of domestication and foreignization.

Domestication is TL-culturally oriented translation strategy in which a natural, fluent style is adopted in order to minimize the linguistic and cultural strangeness of the foreign text for target language readers; Foreignization is a SL-culturally oriented translation strategy in which the original forms and content, especially the original cultural features are kept in order to retain the foreignism.

Foreiniztaion is Source language culture oriented. It has some advantages. Firstly, it can keep the original taste of the source text. And secondly, it can introduce the exotic culture into the target language. The presentatives are Lu Xun,Dong Qiusi and Bian Zhilin and so on.

2.2 The characteristics between domestication and foreinization

Domestication is target language culture oriented. It has some advantages. Firstly, it can enhance the readability of the target text And secondly, it can promote cultural communication. The presentatives are Yan Fu, Lin Shu,Zhu Shenghao and Fu Lei.

2.3 Overview of domestication and foreinization

2.3.1 Overview of domestication and foreinization in the west

Studies on domestication and foreignization in the west can be tracked back to Friedrich Schleiermacher in 1813. In his book, he mentioned that in translation, there are two paths:

Either the translator leaves the author in peace, as much as possible, and moves the reader toward him. Or he leaves the reader in peace,as much as possible, and moves the author toward him(Venuti,1995:19-20)

The two paths emphasized above are much related to the original definition of domestication and to that of foreignization. Schleiermacher thought that the reder-to-author path is better than author-to-reader path, for he thought that German could be perfect if translation could contact with foreign elements.

Eugene Nida is in favor of domesticating translation,he advocate it and focuses on the communicative function of translation. He put forward dynamic equivalence and classified it into two levels:minimal level of equivalence and maximal level of equivalence. Dynamic equivalence means that the receptors of the massage in the receptor language respond to it in the same manner as the receptors in the source language(Nida,1964:166). He thought that maximal level of equivalence is perfect but hard to achieve. And as

for the former one,he regarded it as the basic requirement of translation. “ A dynamic equivalence aims at complete naturalness of expression, and tries to relate the receptor to modes of behavior relevant within the context of his own culture”(Nida,1964:159). It is no need for the readers to know the culture background in the source language text. He thought that good translation lies in natural readable for the readers.
