Womenrsquo;s Tragic Fate in Faulknerrsquo;s Absalom, Absalom!
Abstract: William Faulkner, a world renowned literary master, is an eminent representative in southern American literature. In his nearly forty yearsrsquo; writing career, readers are deeply moved and influenced by his works. Faulkner now is recognized as the strongest American novelist of this century. In 1950, Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his extraordinary achievements. “Faulkner is...the only American novelist apart from Henry James to have produced a sizable number of books for each of which the highest claims can plausibly be advanced.” A large quantity of scholars are studying about William Faulknerrsquo;s works. The researches on him involves many fields, mainly in racial discrimination, biblical archetypes, Christian humanism and womenrsquo; tragedy. To some degree, Faulknerrsquo;s works are reflection of his era. He pointed out a future road which is hard but hopeful. This may be the far-reaching and universal significance of his masterworks.

Ⅰ.Literature Review
William Faulkner, as a world eminent literary master, is a famous representative in southern American literature. Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi of America, but he was living in Oxford most of his lifetime when the family moved there. About his hometown, Faulkner says, “Irsquo;m inclined to think that my material, the South, is not very important to me. I just happen to know it, and do not have time in one life to learn about another one and write at the same time.” He went through the Civil War, with the abolition of slavery and the invasion of northern capitalism in early twentieth century, the southern American traditional agricultural economy began to collapse. The fluctuation of the social and economic foundation caused collapse of the social structure of the old southern gentry, and the traditional morals and values maintaining the structure. It is in such a historical background that Faulkner begins his literary creation.

William Faulkner wrote many influential books such as As I Lay Dying, Absalom, Absalom!, The Sound and the Fury, which brings him to the peak of his literary career. That is the reason why numerous scholars are studying this great masterrsquo;s works.
