The Development of Middle School Studentsrsquo; Intercultural Communication Competence

摘要:Globalization, international conflict and security, environmental challenges, world health issues, shifting populations and so many international issues have made intercultural communication a necessity (Samovar, Porter amp;McDaniel, 2012).A growing number of articles, monographs and textbooks about intercultural communication have been published in China since cross-cultural communication studies were introduced in the early 1980s. Developing studentsrsquo; intercultural communication competence is the primary task of second language teaching (Bi Jiwan 2005:66). Meanwhile, many scholars have given the definitions of communication competence, intercultural communication and intercultural communication competence. In this paper, we mainly adapt the definition concluded by Hu Wenzhong(2013:4), that is intercultural communicative competence includes 3 elements. They are cognition, emotion and behavior. On the conceptual level, in order to have a successful intercultural communication, students need not only basic knowledge of culture, but also specially designated knowledge, as well as the knowledge about politics, economies, histories, religions and customs of both the native and foreign countries. In the emotional level, students should be sensitive toward the differences of the culture. It is important to deeply understand our own culture. At the same time, students should respect and contain other cultures. At the behavioral level, it includes linguistic competence, nonlinguistic competence, communication and interpersonal skills and so on.

一、文献综述

Intercultural communicative competence itself is a complex issue. And it is of great importance for us to understand some basic notions. For example, what is intercultural communication, how to give an appropriate defination to intercultural communication competence, what are the components of intercultural communication competence, and so on.

Hymes (1972) coined the term communication competence as the knowledge of both rules of grammar and rules of language use appropriate to a given context. And the concept of communication competence was discussed and redefined by many other authors.

It was conceptualized by Ruben (1976: 336) as “the ability to function in a manner that is perceived to be ralatively consistent with the needs, capacities, goals, and expectations of the individuals in onersquo;s environment while satisfying onersquo;s own needs, capacities, goals, and expectations”.

It was also defined by Canale and Swain (1980) in terms of four components: sociolingustic competence, grammatical competence, strategic competence and discourse competence. The socialinguistic competence refers to the usage of the appropriate utterances in particular social setteings. The grammatical competence refers to the speakerrsquo;s grammatical knowledge of their language such as pronunciation, spelling, intonation, sentence structure, word-formation and sentence combining, etc. The strategic competence refers to the usage of communicative strategies to compensate for gaps in communication. The discourse competence refers to the ability to combine ideas to achieve cohesion in form and in thought.
